The relationship between the UK and the EU has become a hot button issue in the UK. There are many doubts whether the former should leave the European Union or not. Some are unhappy with the way the Union currently works and think it is taking away their freedom. In my essay I will try to analyze the above relationship from the center and answer the question that arises in the topic. It is true that our geography has shaped our psychology, David Cameron said in a speech on the European Union in 2013. The one irrefutable fact highlights the kind of relationship the United Kingdom has had with the European Union for many years now . We have the character of an island nation, Cameron continues. “Off the northwestern coast of Europe, there are two large islands and several smaller islands.” (O'Driscoll 8) The fact that the United Kingdom is an island has indeed shaped not only the psychology of its citizens but also its history. “The period of isolation is long gone, but perhaps it still retains some of its impact on the British people, who do not want ties to the continent,” says Vernon Bognador. 'The ideal of a united Europe, strong in economic and political institutions, became increasingly attractive to European statesmen after the Second World War (1939-1945)' (Oakland 101) The opportunity to unite Europe appeared with the birth of the European Economic Community (EEC), when six countries (Western Germany, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Italy) signed the Treaty of Rome.
