As no citizens showed any opposition, the silence evidently benefited the oppressive leaderships of Abigail and Hitler. Salem is the home where too many people are submissive, lack courage, and exhibit shortcomings. Furthermore, German citizens were quite the same way as they too chose not to rebel. (Kannan) Whether it was personal preference, fear, or attitude, the citizens of Salem and Germany chose NOT to rebel and that is what made them so identical. Essentially, the reason no one rebelled against Abigail's unjust accusations was that they were afraid. If they tried to help the innocent they would make the situation worse or get into trouble. For example, Giles Cory tried to talk openly about his wife and it got worse. “They tell lies about my wife” (Miller 79) Giles Cory asks the court to free his innocent wife who was falsely accused and sadly was eventually hanged. Because of his involvement in trying to save her, he was also accused and killed. This was one of the reasons people stayed silent, nothing good ever came out of being a hero. People believed that they should mind their own business like John Proctor did. At the beginning of the second act his wife suggests that he speak and prove to the court that Abigail is a fraud. “I'd like to go to Salem now, John, let me go tonight,” to which he replied, “I'll think about it.” (Miller, 51) John knew the
