After World War I, the United States consolidated its title as a world power; a country that many others take inspiration from, a country that others look up to and seek for protection. So it's too painful to think of American soldiers committing war crimes. War crimes, such as the No Gun Ri massacre during the early years of the Korean War. A massacre that cost the lives of hundreds of Korean refugees at the hands of the troops of the Seventh Cavalry of the United States Army. Such events galvanize the integrity of the United States and make us question who these troops were, where, and why they would follow such a radical order. The events that occurred in Noguen-ri were tragic, but they called into question the morality of the military. The characteristics of these soldiers are established in their four years of membership in an institute. Institutes that breed and tolerate only a closed culture. We have been made to believe that these institutes constitute the formation of an institute man, which ultimately benefits the individual and society as a whole, although these processes of creating the institute man are also harmful. The purpose of many military institutes is to create what is known as "The Whole Man", a concept that incorporates the institute's teaching of the mind, body and spirit. In The Lords of Discipline we are introduced to this theory by Colonel Durrell during his meeting with Private Will Mclean, he says that, "You [Will] must remember that the goal of the Institute is to produce 'the whole man.' The whole man, Mr. McLean. It is a noble concept. But the man without honor cannot be the Complete Man” (Conroy 53). ... middle of paper ... ughton Mifflin, 1980. Print.Gibbs, Nancy.
