The use of chemicals in weapons dates back thousands of years, from poisoned arrows to poisonous fumes. However, chemical warfare took a new approach during World War I. The first large-scale attack was chlorine in April 1915. World War II brought with it a whole new spectrum of chemical weapons, and many countries obtained large stockpiles.1 There are four different categories into which chemical weapons weapons are organized based on what the effects are. The first category includes blistering agents that cause blisters to form on the skin. The second category concerns suffocating agents that cause the airways in the victim's throat to close, resulting in death. The third category is nerve agents that cause nerve damage to victims.
