Topic > Essay on Immigration in American Culture - 1051

Assimilation can be defined as the process in which a person's culture resembles the culture of the majority. This is true for many first-generation immigrants who are exposed to American culture for the first time. For example, I came to this country when I had already identified with another culture, which made the transition between countries much more difficult than for someone who was born here. Coming to the United States I had to learn the language and many of the cultural norms that are expected of me even though I was not part of that culture to begin with. After many years of living here, I have adopted many of the cultural values that Americans hold and have even changed parts of my personality to fit my new found culture. Even though I was not against assimilating American culture as my own, I still retain some of the values of my culture, such as the strong value of family bonds and the enjoyment of the spicy rhythm offered by salsa music. This is something different that many children of immigrants do not have as they completely neglect their parents' culture and adopt American culture as their only culture.
