Topic > Persuasive Essay on Gun Control - 796

”'We should not blame a gun itself for any crime or act of violence, any more than we can blame a pen for the misspelling of a word'” ( Rodkey). This statement, made by Robert Bennett, explains very well why citizens should be allowed to freely possess firearms. It is a privilege clearly granted to Americans in the United States Constitution. One mistake someone makes doesn't mean guns should be taken away from other innocent people. Being able to own a firearm is a right given to us by the Second Amendment; therefore, taking it away is not only unconstitutional, but it goes against the beliefs of many Americans who feel in a state of security thanks to this right. Carrying weapons is something we are able to do thanks to clearly stated laws. The Constitution says: “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed” (Congress). If you wish, you can own a gun, but only if you meet the legal requirements. For example, in Alabama, you must be eighteen years old to purchase a rifle from a licensed seller. To purchase a gun you must be at least twenty-one years old. You can buy them in any local sports store or public place without manufacturing and authorization; however, some federal laws create some complications. For example, if you are a felon, being able to own a gun will be more difficult due to your previous crimes. If all legal requirements are met, the "Firearm Owners Protection Act" or FOPA ensures that you can own any firearm you legally own (Carter). Furthermore, as provided by the Constitution, no government shall have the power, unless expressly granted by its Constitution, to prohibit any person from… middle of paper… the United States (O' Brien). The goal of our founding fathers was to make sure that everyone in the country had a gun if they wanted one and that the government didn't take it away illegally, as happened when America was fighting for its independence. Owning a gun gives Americans a feeling of security and knowing that it will not be taken away because of the Second Amendment established by our founding fathers. Allowing American citizens to own firearms gives them a sense of protection and security in their home. The government taking away this right would be unconstitutional and against the better judgment of many people in America. Bad situations caused by firearms are more complex than simply pulling the trigger. It has more to do with who is behind the gun itself. It's better to be safe with a firearm than sorry without one.
