Each personality is well developed and is usually divided into host and alter ego. Change usually happens when the alter has to be there to handle reality. It happens instantly without the host noticing. In most cases, when the change occurs, the alter knows everything about the host, including its internal conflicts, while the host knows nothing about the alter. The alter is fully aware of the host's thoughts and actions. DID is a psychological defense against trauma. The dissociation process in DID sufferers occurs through repression. Due to a traumatic experience, someone may repress the unwanted memory because they can't bear to deal with it. There is a personality formation created by the sufferer to obtain something he wants to obtain or a form of anticipation for things he does not expect to happen.
