Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs is “a systematic arrangement of needs, according to priority, in which basic needs must be satisfied before less basic needs are elicited” (Weiten). For example, I can even have a goal like learning a language because my most basic needs, such as physiological needs and safety, are met. My goal might have been much more different if I was often hungry or didn't have "long-term survival and stability" (Weiten). Other “average” needs such as belonging, love and esteem needs are also already checked boxes on my list of needs. I have both “affiliation and acceptance” and “achievement and acquisition of recognition” (Weiten). Overall, I am satisfied with my resources and needs and therefore my goal does not necessarily benefit any of these needs, however, my goal is based more on self-actualization. Weiten defines this as “realizing potential,” and learning American Sign Language is definitely part of reaching my full potential, which is why this goal exists. However, it's possible that the main reason it's being rejected is because my lower needs aren't being met from time to time. Overall, however, my goal is not very related to any of the other needs beyond the need for self-actualization, where this goal exists simply because I realize that I am capable of learning ASL, and it is only a matter of time before to reach that
