A rose is the perfect flower to represent love. Its vibrant red stimulates the heart of every girl. But even the most beautiful rose has its thorns. Appearing during youth, the thorns grow next to the rose, contrasting with the shiny bud. In Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, Estella plays the rose of Pip's life, the object of his adoration, yet always causing him pain. Raised by the afflicted Miss Havisham from the age of three, she is bred to "take revenge on all the male sex". Complemented by her radiant beauty, she enchants all men around her and traps them in her trap. As a child raised by Miss Havisham, Estella is growing into the compassionate avenger she should be. As an adult woman, Estella refines her adamant and begins her era of tormenting the youth of the world. Eventually, as she becomes discontented with her status in the world, she throws away the people who cared about her and pays the price. Adopted by Miss Havisham when she was a child, Estella achieves a high social position. Raised to be protected from Miss Havisham's love mistakes, she is trained to repress notions of romantic love. "[stealing] her heart and [putting] ice in its place," Miss Havisham thus prevents Estella from gaining the ability to achieve true happiness in life. The true meaning and feeling of love is unknown to Estella. Condescension and insensitivity towards others are ingrained in his being from the beginning, and he may become increasingly incapable of loving as he matures. When Pip is hired to be her playmate, she revels in the opportunity to practice her skill. Encouraged by Miss Havisham, Estella hones her ability to break hearts with Pip, but he is only the first of many destined to meet that fate. After... half of the paper... hard experience and suffering that social position is not indicative of a person's character and goodness. The common Pip's love is much deeper and more significant than the noble Drummle's desire, no more than superficial, for a possession to boast of. Life is full of people who express genuine feelings and vile actors who use sweet but false speeches. Choosing someone who seeks to live as much for their partner's happiness as their own can mean the difference between a shattered or complete existence. Judgment should be based on the quality of character and purity of intentions. The ugly duckling may turn out to be a swan. Estella's relationships with the upper classes have left her with almost scars and painful memories. The higher rungs of the social ladder do not play well with the lower ones, and Estella was born into the lowest caste of all..
