Hantono was preparing dinner for the Mister when he remembered a stain he wanted to remove. She called a group of other maids and her friends for advice on how to remove the stain. But along with the advice came the rumors. Many of the people she called told her that there was a rumor that the Mister had killed his wife. Mr. Hantono paid no attention to the remarks until one of the waitresses suggested she try lemon juice. The acid from the lemon juice drew a white outline around the stain and gave it the appearance of a chalk outline of a crime scene. He looked up to see the gentleman looking at the stain and they were both thinking the same thing. Later that night, after her shift, Ms. Hantono went to collect her money. It was on the table where it had always been. She was paid $40. But when she went to get the money she left $5. “In its place she leaves a five dollar bill from her purse because she still couldn't get the stain out” (105). This symbolizes that Mrs. Hantono doesn't care about rumors. He realizes that he is the only person the Mister has contact with besides the people he works with. He's moving on with his life through her. She's the reason he still has a reason to do it
