Mexico is home to the abundant variety and rich history of various musical traditions, from corridos, to Banda music to Cumbia (Bakan 239). Spanish music cheers up people's joys, struggles and achievements. Mariachi has played an important role in my life. At a young age, I was exposed to mariachi music by listening to them on the radio or seeing them play at a party. Coming home from a Spanish speaking home Spanish music is always around. Mariachi music is important because it is part of culture and tradition. My musical experience with mariachi is that it is mostly played at weddings, parties, and to serenade an individual. Spanish music usually has a story behind each song, from songs of joy to songs of sadness played at funerals. Mariachis originated in the Mexican state of Jalisco, in the small town of Cocula, in 1860 during the French invasion of Mexico. ("Introduction to Mariachi Music"). To maintain ethnic unity, they kept traditional mariachi music with family and friends (2005). Mariachi conferences are held all over the world to educate new generations. They offer workshops and instruction from older musicians. Clark says “keeping kids interested in Mexican culture is a goal.” Mariachi sol de Mexico, a popular mariachi group from Los Angeles, raises funds for mariachi conference to continue work in teaching younger generations about mariachi and culture (2005).
