Topic > The Titanic: The Titaking Of The Titanic - 1034

“It took two hours and forty minutes for the Titanic to sink, just long enough for 2,208 tragic performances to take place, with the ship's lights on” (Sides 2 ). In April 1912, the pride of the White Star Line, the Titanic, set out on the voyage that would change history forever. While traveling across the Atlantic Ocean they collided with an iceberg causing fractures throughout the boat. Frozen water filled the compartments causing the front of the boat to weigh down the rear, separating the boat in two. Research shows that the cause of the sinking of the Titanic was due to the dramatic increase in the probability of encountering an iceberg and its high speed while traveling along the North Atlantic shipping lanes in 1912. As a result of the sinking, the Coast Guard of the United States now manages the international ice patrol and monitors icebergs via radar and satellite. Furthermore, it is now mandatory to always carry binoculars and a radio connector on board a ship. In 1912, the "mother of all shipwrecks" collapsed, including confidence in all future technology. Jim Willis states in 100 Media Moments that Changed America that “The Titanic was the pride of the white star line” (Willis 48). The White Starline placed so much faith in the Titanic that it decreased the number of lifeboats on board. The Titanic's enormous size was the only record it truly held. William H. Garzke of The World Book explains that "Many people believed the ship was unsinkable because its new hull was divided into 16 watertight compartments" (Garzke 300). These watertight compartments had such a small chance of water escaping further, that the boat could stay afloat even with some compartments filled with water. The water compartments were so sealed that the never imagined t...... middle of paper ...... with which even people today are hit. But even though this tragedy occurred, it saved our future from a similar wreck to that one. The sinking of the Titanic was due to the high speed at which the boat was traveling and the increase in icebergs entering the North Atlantic shipping lanes in 1912. The sinking of the Titanic worried people, so consequently, via radar and satellite, people, like the U.S. Coast Guard, now monitor icebergs across the country. While the Titanic was the pride of the White Star Line, her sister ship Olympic was almost exactly the same but faster. In 1912, over 1,000 icebergs entered the North Atlantic shipping lanes. After the accident, people feared the future of technology. The problem with this world is that there is too much faith in our technology. Our technology has flaws and we can't give it too much credit.
