Exemplary leaders have a profound and positive influence on the engagement and performance of their followers. To achieve and sustain success, exemplary leaders must effectively communicate a clear vision, cultivate a team environment, and establish cooperative goals. Coach Boone demonstrated several actions and behaviors that represent the five practices of exemplary leadership. Kouzes and Posner explain that to achieve the extraordinary, you must be willing to do things that have never been done before (Kouzes & Posner, 2003). Demonstrating Practice 3, Challenge the Process, Coach Boone accepted the extraordinary task of being the first black football coach to integrate the coaching staff of the formally all-white TC Williams High School. Coach Boone's arrival and appointment as head coach was not well received and was rejected by several members of the staff and team. White coaches threatened to quit and white players threatened to boycott the season. Both Coach Boone and Yoast knew that every decision they made in addressing the current situation would affect the voters and communities they unofficially represented. They would either challenge the process and initiate change, or they would fall back into the status quo of segregation. Over the course of the season, unique relationships emerged between the coaches and between Campbell and Bertier. The confidence among the coaches grew with each victory. Coach Yoast dealt with unfair officials to ensure fair games, and Coach Boone utilized Yoast's strategy on crucial plays. The more games the team won, the more the community tolerated integration and social change. Kouzes and Posner's Practice 2 Inspire a Shared Vision describes an example...... middle of paper ......n, Bertier was responsible for meeting Coach Boone's expectations. He had to make sure the black and white players got along and developed their own trust regime. During training Bertier confronted Campbell about his selfish acts and bad attitude. Campbell said his attitude reflected Bertier's leadership and that black players felt white players intentionally missed plays contributing to black players' injuries. This impressed Bertier and motivated him to reunite the team. The “Strong Side/Left Side” chant became the catalyst that brought the players together. It represented that one side would not succeed without the other. The new found camaraderie between Bertier and Campbell developed into a lifelong friendship. Bertier continued to emerge as a leader by breaking down the intolerant attitude of his mother and girlfriend.
