Topic > Colonization of the Moon - 714

The colonization of the Moon is the first step towards humanity becoming an interplanetary species. It is the only logical choice, due to its proximity to Earth. There will be many benefits if the colonization of the Moon is successful. Colonization will consist of three missions, each bringing more humans to work and support the base. The first mission will transport twenty-five people and install basic necessities. The first components to be installed would be the power plants and communications stools, as well as the habitats. Other components, such as laboratories, transport devices and ports would arrive later. Colonization of the Moon would take about five years. The site of the colony is an important detail. It must be close to many resources, especially oxygen, for the colony to advance as quickly as possible. The location must also have adequate topography for transportation. The lunar poles are the best location for the lunar colony. There is evidence that there may be water near the polar regions. The poles are exposed to the sun most of the time; this will allow the colony to be powered primarily by clean, affordable solar energy. The significantly lower gravitational force on the Moon will have a large impact on the Moon's architecture. Fewer materials will be used than those used by structures on Earth. The first basic buildings will be similar to tents and will block the sun's harmful rays. As more material is mined and collected, the building will increase in complexity. due to the lack of time on the Moon the structure will be able to reach greater heights with fewer materials. The colony's living quarters will simulate the day and night patterns of the earth. Other aspects of d... middle of paper... I will be self-sufficient. If planning goes according to plan, the first mission will begin during 2012. The first mission will consist of building the basic infrastructure and establishing communications. The creation of an energy source and the extraction of the necessary chemicals will also be carried out. The purpose of this first mission is to ensure that the colony is ready for long-term stability. The purpose of the next two missions will be to bring materials to add accessories to the lunar colony. This includes a laboratory, greenhouse, telescope and other scientific purpose facilities. The lunar colony would be completed in the year 2017.Works Cited http://aerospacescholars.jsc.nasa.gov/HAS/cirr/em/8/1.cfm http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/ exploration/ main/index.htmlhttp://science.howstuffworks.com/what-if-moon-colony.htmhttp://www.lunarpedia.org/
