Topic > Police Brutality is a Human Rights Violation - 992

Police brutality is one of the most serious human rights violations in the United States and occurs everywhere. The reason I chose this topic is because police brutality occurs continuously in the United States and still remains unacknowledged by many. Additionally, the public should be informed about this topic due to the seriousness of this crime and the serious consequences police brutality can have on other police officers and the public. The job of police officers is to maintain public order, prevent and detect crimes. They are involved in very dangerous and stressful occupations that can involve violent situations that must be stopped and controlled by any means. In many confrontations with people, the police may find it necessary to use excessive force to gain control of a situation. Sometimes this leads to an officer getting into an argument with a suspect who resists arrest. Not all cops in communities are great cops. At least once a year, the news reports a story of a person being beaten by an officer. The article “Minority Threat and Police Brutality: Determinants of Civil Rights Criminal Complaints in US Municipalities” by Malcolm D. Holmes of the University of Wyoming, uses conflict theory to explain why officers prosecute minorities who sometimes cause police brutality part of the police. This explains police tension with African American and Latino males. Those minorities are the ones who react the most against police officers, which causes the officer to use violent force to defend himself. Police brutality occurs when an officer beats a person or criminal even if he or she does not resist arrest or fight back. One of the most common forms of police brutality is racial profiling. In the United States, batting... middle of paper... I don't deserve it. This article I chose is a perfect example of why officers commit police brutality on people, especially minorities. Racial profiling by officers must also stop because not everyone belonging to a certain race is a criminal. What I read in the text complements the information about police brutality provided in this article because they both explain why officers pursue minorities because they assume the person will fight back. This article also complements classroom discussions on this topic. Works CitedPolice Officers Oath of Office and Code of Ethics, A Question of knowledge Richard W.
