Topic > UK Political Devolution and Scottish Independence

Within this essay I will discuss and evaluate Scotland's devolved political system. Devolution is the transfer of power and since 1999 the UK has changed because of devolution. This was introduced to try to give more power to Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland which together with England make up the United Kingdom. Devolution votes took place in Scotland and Wales in 1997 and in Ireland in 1998. This is why the Scottish Parliament was created alongside the National Assembly for Wales and the Northern Ireland Assembly, however devolution did not mean all nations changed in the same way, devolution meant different things for each nation due to administrative and historical differences. Devolution was not easy to achieve and took Scotland many years. ((Devolution. (2013). Devolution of powers to Scotland.) Separate parliaments no longer existed in 1707 when the Act of Union was adopted. This created a single parliament for the United Kingdom based in London, known as Westminster. This discussion about having a separate parliament has been a topic discussed for many years, dating back to the end of the First World War. Between 1913 and 1919 Scotland was seen to be doing well economically and. In 1919 Conservative MPs organized a conference to discuss the possibility of devolution. However it was not seen as a good idea due to the political crisis created by Ireland's desire for independence which they were unable to achieve for the next 10 years Scotland struggled through the Depression and appeared to have been hit much harder than England and Wales, however in the 1930s Scotland returned to discussing the idea of a separate parliament and even took part in a poll which gave the people an idea. ...... middle of paper ...... support Yes.
