Men and women should always be considered equal and one gender should never feel inferior to another. In the early 20th century there were three women delivering this message across Canada. Emily Murphy has played a significant role in promoting equality between men and women. Similarly, Nellie McClung has taken it upon herself to encourage gender equality. Furthermore, Agnes Macphail acted as a role model and had the important task of demolishing this gender wall. Women managed to achieve a look of greater equality during the twentieth century, with the help of Emily Murhpy, Nellie McClung, and Agnes Macphail. Emily Murphy played a vital role in helping women achieve a level of true equality during the twentieth century. While visiting a farm on the prairie, Emily Murphy noticed a stressed woman. The woman was stressed because her husband had sold their land and fled to the United States, leaving the woman homeless. Becoming very determined, Emily Murphy decided to change the law. In 1911, the Dower Act was finally passed in Alberta, giving women the right to own one-third of their husband's property.1 Emily Murphy's momentous decision to help change the law so that it was beneficial to women demonstrates her determination to make sure women have their rights. Even though the law wasn't entirely fair, it still shows that Emily Murphy took an initiative and helped women get one step closer to their goal. Before Murphy took this essential action, many women were left homeless, as they had no rights to their husband's property, and if she had not done so, many more women would have become victims. Whether women could own property was an important issue in those days, and this was only made possible by the... middle of paper... welcomed into the public arena."9 (Staton, 96) . Here, going against what was thought to be socially acceptable, Macphail again showed herself as a role model who demonstrated that women were capable of being exactly what men were, so they did not have to sit back, but prove their worth to those who opposed them. In conclusion, women would not have been able to achieve a level of true equality without the assistance and the many contributions of Emily Murphy, Nellie McClung and Agnes Macphail. All three of these women have worked tirelessly to give to women the rights they deserved. As Emily Murphy created new laws, Nellie McClung opened doors to new career opportunities for women, and Agnes Macphail served as a role model and mentored many women. Women's equality is not about whether women are treated with superiority, but instead refers to the equal status of both men and women.
