People infected with food-borne illnesses may not appear to have any symptoms, but may often suffer from dehydration or diarrhea. On an annual basis, Americans have an estimated 76 million reports of some type of food poisoning. Fortunately, most of these cases have proven to be non-life-threatening. The downside is that people don't go to doctors. This makes it difficult for professionals to find a way to link various diseases to different foods, making the search for the source more complicated. Depending on the infection, it can be fatal.
