The Promising Distance EducationWhen you walk on the street, you can often see that people usually carry a smartphone with them. As we can see in today's society, high-tech products such as smartphones and computers are often used by people. With the development of high-tech Internet network technology, distance education, also known as distance learning, has been widely used by many students in recent years. According to Wikipedia, a world-renowned reference site, distance learning is "the training of students who are not physically present in a school" (para. 1). It is indisputable that it saves a lot of time for students whose homes are far from school. Without going to school, they would have more. At this point, distance education is a great option for them, because it allows them to receive knowledge from various resources. “In distance education, the student is located away from campus and is educated through a combination of media, in which the specially prepared printed text is central. Depending on resources, a wide variety of other media can be used, particularly TV, video, and personal computers, all of which can be placed in remote study centers and shared by a number of students” (Ozcan, 347). Thanks to the advantages of distance education, students do not have to follow the professors' method to understand the concept of new materials; since most of the time the solutions can be obtained in various ways. As a result, they can find the method that suits them best. Furthermore, when students study in class, they can simply take notes and listen to what the professor presents in class. In other words, the materials they study are very limited. Because there are so many resources that can be found on the Internet, students are able to learn more materials than they could learn from their professors. Since it provides students with different teaching materials and methods, distance education should be highly valued. One article uncovers a disadvantage that may be “initial resistance to learning computer technology online among some faculty and students…because it takes time to learn a new technology online” (Lei 618 ). There is no denying that both faculties and students need time to adapt to the new educational environment. Since they are used to teaching and learning through conventional education, it is reasonable that distance education is not comfortable for them. However, as Internet usage grows rapidly, it is imperative that everyone learns online technologies. Even though it would cost a lot of time for users, especially those who rarely use computers in daily life, considering its enormous convenience, distance learning is worth it
