Despite its continued aging, the epic poem Beowulf is still currently discussed in modern English courses, allowing the reader to reveal and discuss some associated literary themes throughout the epic. A debatable theme associated with the Anglo-Saxon style poem is whether a great warrior can also be an important ruler of his own land or not. A warrior is usually associated with victory in difficult situations, automatically associating himself as a great leader or king of a kingdom. However, heroic actions cannot simply determine a great leader, but rather the character traits unique to each great warrior and necessary to produce a great leader. Traits such as: divine strength, courage to challenge all, loyalty and courtesy towards others, invoking a commanding respect among their subordinates. In Beowulf, this can be seen in the personal development of Beowulf's true character from being a young warrior in the beginning, to becoming a mature leader of a kingdom. In opposition, a different argument can be made for Hrothgar, as he may be seen as a leader lacking the right priorities given his responsibilities. Rather than focusing on major conflicts, Hrothgar can be seen to be more in favor of his personal cheerfulness. Like many young adults in today's society, Beowulf believed himself to be invincible and accepted challenges whose outcome was most likely death, if a tragic event. an error occurred. However, with the trait of strength and courage comparable to that of a lion, Beowulf showed what is needed in a great king in his challenging swim with Breca. Although he displays a certain immaturity, Beowulf describes his struggles in exposing the icy waters of the bones. For five... half of the card... my weakness and my trust and loyalty to the king would definitely be in question. In opposition, Beowulf handled any threat to his land with ease. Even though the final threat ultimately led to his death, Beowulf still defeated a grave threat to his people. These two examples can prove that a great warrior can also be a great leader. Both Hrothgar and Beowulf share the same traits of a great leader; that of loyalty, strength, courage and courtesy. The main difference between the two is that Beowulf is a great warrior and Hrothgar simply is not. This doesn't mean that Hrothgar is a terrible king, but when compared to Beowulf he can be seen as a much stronger leader. Over time, Beowulf matured as an exemplary leader, capable of making hasty decisions for the best of his subjects, stemming from the core traits acquired and developed from being a great warrior..
