According to Christiaan Barnard, a world-renowned surgeon, he believed that there was a good life and a good death. “He supported compassion for the terminally ill, but at the same time encouraged intense discussions when suffering and serious deterioration were at stake.” (Toledo-Pereyra. Pg.125) Barnard never practiced active euthanasia because it was not legal and was considered murder in his country. Barnard was concerned about how the inability to control his personal environment would make him feel. Barnard believed that if he found himself in the position of being terminally ill, it would be better to die than live the rest of his life.
