Antonio Perez Guerrero Essay n. 4 Diversity The concept of diversity is very broad and covers many definitions. We can say that diversity is above all a characteristic feature of our world and of the reality of the society around us. A reality that in recent years has been strengthened by economic globalization and the mobilization of markets and people. More and more people are moving around the world, bringing their culture and personal experience with them. For our society, cultural diversity is a fact that has become very evident for many years, largely thanks to the incorporation of immigrants. In the case of a company, cultural diversity can bring a series of positive elements such as creativity, innovative spirit, commitment, responsibility, knowledge, experience, etc. However, very often, cultural diversity is interpreted into stereotypes and prejudices. And in a certain sense, more or less open, people are considered different and in many cases subjected to negative consideration. In most cases, this means that cultural diversity is associated with difficulties and problems and the more positive side is not contemplated. Clearly, not all people belonging to the same culture are the same. Each person or society has its own identity, established by factors such as ethnic history, religious tradition, paths, backgrounds and experiences. This is why cultural diversity has a negative impact on a group of people or a country. It creates social problems and conflicts that ultimately result in riots, revolutions or wars. For example, in Amy Tan's “Mother Tongue” she explains the difficulties and inconveniences she has to endure due to her Chinese mother and primitive English. The author, who grew up in the United States, has communication problems with her mother. You write that and......middle of paper......this is not true because I have experienced it. My home country, Puerto Rico, suffers from a diverse society. Since Puerto Rico is part of the United States, many American cultures, laws, traditions and other things have been mixed with native Puerto Rican cultures. This created the great problem of the extinction of nationality. We Puerto Ricans are very passionate and devoted to our traditions, but every day we see American culture taking over. Diversity is a very powerful fact of life, if it were a weakness of society on many levels. Cultures that should not mix will eventually clash over riots and social problems. People should try to maintain their cultural identification and respect each other. From a small town in Mexico, to the big city of Hong Kong in China, each community has its own identity that should not mix with others.
