The Catcher in the Rye is a book that is a fun and engaging novel that describes, to some extent, the typical journey that every person goes through in adolescence. It is relatable to many in that stage of life between childhood and adulthood. But is it too explicit and should it be banned or censored from schools? My opinion is that the censorship is a little extreme for this book. This novel should not be banned or censored because it is relatable to people in Holden Claufield's age group, it does not use overly explicit sexual language and descriptions for the age group it is aimed at, my personal experience with the books at high school and gives teenagers and seniors in schools and classes more of a wide variety of books in addition to the expected old literature. Censorship is defined as the suppression or proscription of words or writings deemed obscene, indecent, or excessively controversial (The Free Dictionary). The company practiced censorship because it believed that the community was a representation of the government. Therefore, they felt responsible for shaping people in the community. It is used to suppress ideas and images that the government cannot see to the public. The book is aimed at people in the adolescent stage of life. Speaking from personal experience, students appreciate more than anything when they can read a story in their English class that can relate to them even if it's just a short story. Holden goes through a phase in the book that pretty much every person in his age group goes through, and that is finding himself and figuring out what he wants to do with his life. Holden also resembles that teenage rebellion that a person goes through at some point in that age range, which makes it... middle of paper... This is the worst word in the entire book other than the repetitive word Holden like to say. Overall, Catcher in the Rye should not be censored. It is recognizable by the age group it is aimed at and helps people who may also be in the same situation or feeling the same way as Holden. The book does not contain much explicit language or sexual details. It's a great book to deepen your English lessons and give students a more modern type of story than the older literature they are forced to read. In my personal experience I also read books in high school that were much worse. Catcher in the Rye is one of the best books you can include in English lessons and I'm sure students will appreciate it more than anything.
