The life of a sharecropper is not an easy way to live. Somehow they manage to get by with what little they have. Things start to go wrong when foreigners arrive and begin modernizing their small village. At first they struggle but manage to adapt to the new. Nectar in a Sieve author Kamala Markandaya was influenced by her early career as a journalist, her homeland, and the culture that surrounded her. Kamala Markandaya was born in 1924 in the city of Mysore (Abdullah). He died at the age of eighty in May 2004 at his home outside London, England (Sinclair). She was born into a high-class family who simply believes they have more money and power than most people (Sinclair). So, unlike most women in India, she could attend school. Later in 1940, he went to Madras University (Abdullah). He studied history there and worked as a local journalist (Abdulla). After graduating she became a full-time journalist. She has been a journalist for seven years and enjoys every minute of it (Assisi). He also wrote stories for children in the news (Assisi). This was the beginning of her days as an author and she loved writing for Indian children. At this point Kamala was just starting to make her name known. Many people would have known her mainly through the stories she wrote to children. At the age of twenty-five she settled in England and in 1948 she found love and married (Abdullah). He made England his adopted home, but visited his homeland (Sinclair) regularly. In 1954 she wrote the book Nectar in a sieve and it was her most popular book written by her (Abdullah). Kamala achieved much fame and success with the book Nectar in a Sieve (Assisi). The book also became a bestseller here in the United States, which ensures that his life in this changing world means changing along with it.
