When students do not get the adequate amount of sleep, they become more exposed to the consequences of sleep deprivation. One of the effects of sleep deprivation has to do with the brain. As students become increasingly sleep deprived, their brains begin to shrink. Cells begin to decline, thus making us more susceptible to the negative effects of brain damage. When the brain is damaged, students can experience seizures that could result in death. They may also have Alzheimer's disease due to degeneration of the brain. University students think that studying before exams helps them remember more but this is not true as their ability to concentrate becomes more difficult. Night owls have this effect, they think everything is more difficult. This is true because they don't sleep enough and pay less attention to their surroundings. Ultimately, students' academic performance declines during overtime because they sleep less. Sleep deprivation also causes many health problems. Not getting enough sleep will lead to eating more sugary foods. As a result they may have diabetes. Sleep deprivation plays a major role in college students as they tend to not get enough sleep due to irregular sleep schedules.
