“Rapid internationalization and globalization have increased the importance of workforce diversity.” (Shen, 2009) Today, there is a growing need for diversity management and integrating cultural differences into the company's core values. Over the past two decades, human resources management has tied diversity management to EEOC compliance and affirmative action. Looking to the future, companies need to start looking at diversity in the workplace as an individual focus to utilize. “Less attention has been paid to the valorisation, development and valorization of diversity.” (Shen, 2009) The market is changing rapidly and for a company to be successful the demographics in the workplace must be similar. “Diversity management not only recognizes, but values and exploits workforce differences, such as individual characteristics, backgrounds, religious orientations and beliefs, so that individual talents are fully utilized and organizational goals are achieved.” (Shen, 2009) Not only are there benefits for external stakeholders to see a company's diversity management succeed, but internally having different viewpoints and cultural backgrounds helps bring new perspectives into problem solving. One study found that “a diverse workforce has a better quality solution to brainstorming tasks, exhibits more cooperative behavior than homogeneous groups, and can increase organizational efficiency, effectiveness, and profitability.” (Shen, 2009) The role of human resources in managing diversity is to find a way to implement a strategy to incorporate diversity into the daily business of a company. “Both human resource management and diversity management are about individual differences, the development and well-being of each... half of the document... m-Line: the "diversity management" metaphor.
