Before 1947, the number of homes in the United States equipped with televisions was measured in the thousands, not everyone in the United States had a television. In the 1990s, at least 98% of Americans owned a television. Most American televisions were turned on at least more than 7 hours a day. “The average American spends (depending on the survey and time of year) anywhere from two and a half to nearly five hours a day watching television.” (Stephens) It's amazing how a television can lead more and more people to watch TV, instead of engaging in other activities, such as DIY, reading or going to the gym. A person watching too much TV is bad for the human eye, it also causes stress in the brain which causes headaches and sometimes seizures. It is not healthy to watch TV; a human being should only watch TV for 30 minutes a day. “Electronic television was first successfully demonstrated in San Francisco on September 7, 1927.” (Stephens) The televisions were designed by Philo Taylor, an inelegant 21-year-old who had no electricity in his home from the ages of 14 to 21. While Philo was still at school, he had taken photos of moving things in a form that could encode them into radio waves, so they could go onto a projector and bounce an image off the screen. The first picture broadcast over a signal line was invited by John Baird from New England and Charles Jenkins from the United States, the picture was broadcast earlier in 1920. The first sport caught on television was on May 17, 1939, between the universities of Princeton and Columbia. The baseball game was captured by a single camera. When actors acted on camera, they had to wear bl...... middle of paper......, television began to upgrade to more cable programming and high definition. The federal government gave broadcasters their own television station. In 1998, the World Wide Web was taking over television; computers could handle video better than text. The TV schedules were in the newspapers, so in every Sunday paper you could see all the movies and shows that were going to be on that week. I remember at that time, every Sunday morning before or after church I would go get the Sunday paper for my grandfather, and he would watch all the movies and shows they were showing, because at that time my family didn't have cable TV or dish, anything high tech, we had the old antennas, which was one of the things that came out when televisions were introduced. The antennas look like big bunny ears, and that's how we got the TV signal.
