Women are still paid 77 cents for every dollar a man earns. This not only perpetuates sexism in an extremely obvious way, but it is also one of the most harmful. While being insulted or subtly humiliated can be harmful to women's psyches, the wage gap is harmful to women's physical and emotional well-being. Most people say that to make a big career change, the person changing jobs should have enough money saved to live on for an entire year. This is quite a logical idea, however, it is something that is much easier for men to achieve, given that they receive a higher salary. They have the ability to put money aside, while a woman is more likely to have to spend her entire salary just to live. He won't be able to quit a job, even if he hates it, simply because he can't afford it. A man with the same qualifications as her might not have to worry about this because he averages 23 cents more on the dollar than her. This seems to me to be the root of sexism and one of the first things we as a society need to fix to help women feel more equal in the world. Women have come a long way since the days of the Great Gatsby, however the world still has a long way to go before women can truly feel equal to men.
