The three hitmen knew they couldn't enter the fortress where Anastasia lived, they knew they had to take him somewhere where he felt comfortable. When he ventured into town, he always stopped at his favorite barbershop at the Park Sheraton Hotel at Seventh Avenue and Fifty-fifth Street for a shave and a trim. On October 25, 1957 at 10:15 am the Gallo brothers entered the shop and, while the barber covered Anastasia's face with a towel and lowered the chair, they fired five shots at Anastasia's head and back. Miraculously, Anastasia, with her last ounce of life, threw herself at the assassins, but only hit the mirror in front of her. When news of Albert Anastasia's death reached the other four New York bosses, they learned that Vito Genovese would be moving to become head of the Mafia's ruling body, the Commission. Carlo Gambino knew this too and was determined to make his power play. To decide who would be the leader, Genovese decided to call a rally that notably became the largest Cosa Nostra meeting in history. Almost a hundred bosses, sub-bosses, caporegime and union officials were present, all called by Genovese who hope to be voted as "boss of the bosses". The meeting was to be held in the gigantic estate of Joseph Barbara, near the village of Apalachin, on November 14, 1957. The Cosa Nostra leaders were to discuss who should take Anastasia's place, how to stop the violent changes in leadership occurred, a discussion about membership in the Mafia and, finally, the revision of Cosa Nostra's anti-drug policy, due to the federal government's approval of the 1956 Narcotics Control Act which created the most punitive and repressive law anti-drug legislation never adopted... middle of paper... regarding drugs, Vito, however, felt exempt from that law. He began to create a huge international heroin smuggling operation Gambino, together with Lansky, Frank Costello and Lucky Luciano, formulated a plan to have Genovese nailed by the feds. They hired Puerto Rican hoodlum Nelson Cantellops to testify against Genovese, who he had "seen" purchase large quantities of heroin, paying him a $100,000 bribe. From there an anonymous tip was sent to the Narcotics Bureau and they arrested Genovese and twenty-four of his men for violating the Narcotics Control Act. Cantellops' testimony was the nail in Genovese's coffin at the trial, held in 1959, which sentenced Genovese to 15 years in prison, where he died after 10 years. With Anastasia dead, Genovese in prison, and all of those men's loyal followers dead, Don Carlo's rule was set in stone.
