Globalization is a term used to indicate the international relationship that links countries and markets to the exchange of natural and material resources on a global level, through vast improvements in technology and communication. Thanks to capital, numerous illicit networks exist in the world today. In this article I will argue that globalization is the cause of the latest illicit networks. Illicit networks are a form of institutional behavior that does not follow government rules or laws. First, Thomas Erikson's article on globalization will be discussed; where it addresses the fact that globalization is not only part of capital but part of the world, for example the interconnection of communication and technological development promote the global economy to have trade exchanges all over the world. Secondly, the world becoming global has its advantages; globalization brings with it many types of interconnected systems, where different forms of illicit networks are created. The monetary system at its peak was designed to separate nations not only in their patriotism but also in terms of wealth: this is another form of power inequality. Third, illicit activist networks such as illegal immigrants, drug dealers, and traffickers are created through the national obstacles they face. They are born because they have problems in their society, in the countries they live in; it can range from war to any natural or life-threatening disaster. Therefore, globalization is part of the illicit networks that the world faces today because it is more difficult to control. Globalization in its context existed before the 1980s, when individuals around the world had interconnected relationships with each other in exchanging economic resources internationally. At the beginning of the 17th and 18th centuries, there will be no sharp increase in drug use. Individuals will be educated not to use these forms of drugs, furthermore there will be no more war because there will be equality between individuals. The request for weapons will no longer be necessary because weapons are needed to defend or attack. The borders will not be strictly guarded to prevent people from crossing because this time people will cross the border to visit the country not to escape from the harm being done to them or to live a better life. Therefore, globalization is not only a driving factor for illicit networks, but inequality itself creates these networks. Works Cited Eriksen, T. H. (n.d.). Globalization The key concept.
