John Green's wonderful but tragic best-selling novel The Fault in Our Stars tells the heartbreaking story of two teenagers with cancer who fall in love. Augustus Waters and Hazel Lancaster live in the ordinary city of Indianapolis, where they both attend a support group for cancer patients. In love at first sight, the two are inseparable until Augustus' cancer comes out of remission, turning Hazel's world upside down. This is one of the best young adult fiction novels of the year because it keeps readers on the edge of their seats, uses themes to teach real-life lessons, and uses a realistic point of view instead of the cliché happy ending of most books. The novel begins with a young 16-year-old girl named Hazel with thyroid cancer that has spread to her lungs. She serves as a witty narrator and makes death seem like nothing to be afraid of. Augustus Waters, a 17-year-old formally diagnosed with osteosarcoma, is in remission but has lost a leg to the cancer. From the beginning, John Green makes readers feel suspenseful about when or if Hazel will die and break Augustus' heart. But when Augustus returns to remission, a twist is added to the story and Hazel becomes the healthier partner in their relationship. Hazel and Augustus' love is put to the test as Augustus' health worsens every day. Readers are sitting with bated breath, waiting to see what the fate of this brave couple will be. The Fault in Our Stars also uses many themes to teach life lessons to the young adults who read this book. For example, John Green shows that love conquers everything, even cancer and death. Even if Augustus ends up facing death, Hazel's love for him is true and will not be... middle of paper......singing a loved one is actually like without sugarcoating them. After reading Our Fault Stars, I personally had a different perspective on life, death, and living in the moment. This book teaches readers to live fully and in the present, because you never know how much time you really have left. This novel also taught me that love can overpower anything, and sometimes, it can even make you stronger to make another person happy. The love between Hazel Lancaster and Augustus Water is one of the most powerful love stories I have ever read about. They are a good example of what true love really is and this book was extremely moving to read. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a beautiful yet tragic love story that is very different from any other typical love story. Works Cited Green, John. The fault in our stars.
