The members of the Clutter family were all connected in different ways. Nancy's hands “were tied behind her back and her ankles were tied together with the kind of rope you see on Venetian blinds” (page 62). The way the rope was tied indicates that the killers spent less time with this poor innocent girl. Like they feel bad or sorry for her, but a cold blooded murderer like them feels nothing towards their victim. Mrs. Clutter, on the other hand, was tied “differently – with her hands in front of her, so that it appeared as if she were praying – and in one hand she was clutching a handkerchief. Or a Kleenex? The rope around her wrists went down to her ankles, which were tied together, and then ran to the bottom of the bed” (p. 63). This description given by Mr. Ewalt (who was the man who called the police) suggests that they spent more time on her. Mr. Ewalt even goes on to say that the rope work was “very complicated and artistic work” (page 63) and would take a long time to complete. This was because they enjoyed the feeling of authority they have over their prey. Even the fear and helplessness that resonated with Mrs. Clutter. The way her eyes portrayed fear excited these men to take their time and enjoy every moment until the last moment. Mr. Smith confirms this excitement by confessing to the crime. He says “you couldn't
