This paper will examine the many aspects of long-term care issues and the many challenges that arise within long-term care. We will examine the rising costs of long-term care, patient abuse, quality of life, nursing shortages, and the demand older adults place on the medical field. The type of care that long-term care has provided to its patients and the changes within long-term care. Historical development and current state of health care delivery There have been problems within long-term care and many of these abuses have been committed to patients, there has been almost no guidance on how to manage long-term care long term. “Sorrow houses and almshouses developed in response to an impoverished, elderly, and mentally and physically disabled population lacking informal caregivers.” (Sarah Thompson, 2008) When long-term care was in its early stages of development there were many problems, problems that were created because there wasn't much direction. In the development of elderly care there were poorly trained nurses and health workers and many of them were not qualified to work in the medical field. There were problems, many problems and multiple levels of abuse due to poorly trained healthcare workers with no direction. When long-term care services were being developed, many mistakes had been made in the process of developing long-term care services. “Nursing homes developed throughout the 20th century without any clear national policy or direction.” (Sarah Thompson, 2008) There were many tragedies, mistakes, errors and abuses because there was no type of national direction or policy.
