“It is artistic directors Dwight Rhoden and Desmond Richardson's lifelong appreciation for the artistic and aesthetic appeal of the multicultural that forms the cornerstone of Complexions Contemporary Ballet's singular approach to the reinvention of dance” . During the month of February, the Complexions troupe traveled around the nation to perform for diverse audiences. Dwight Rhoden and Desmond Richardson are the company's founding artistic directors. This critique will focus on the performance at the South Miami Dade Cultural Art Center. It is a contemporary dance company made up of 14 professional dancers; seven are male and the other half are female. A Complexions performance consists of three acts. The acts in chronological order are: Moon Over Jupiter, choreographed by Dwight Rhoden; Recurs, choreographed by Jae Man Joo; and Innervisions, choreographed by Dwight Rhoden. During the choreography of the dances, the choreographers had different stimuli and ideas to propose to the public. The first act, Moon Over Jupiter, was the most challenging of the three to perform. This piece seemed to be about relationships, because the dancers were paired on stage. The dancers' facial expressions gave the impression that the dancers had intimate feelings. Female dancers mostly performed leaps, while male partners accompanied or helped her in the air. Despite the interpretation of the dance, Dwight Rhoden, the choreographer, used dynamics effectively throughout the dance. For the majority of the piece the entire company was on stage, so Rhoden used the space effectively when distributing the dancers across the stage. Additionally, the dancers used a lot of vertical space. In other wo...... middle of paper ......ical and close together. This dance involved a lot of pelvic rotations and movements, which added to the flirtatious vibe; all these movements were performed in sync with the tempo of the music. Additionally, Rhoden did a great job of conveying confidence in relationships. Rhoden did this by having the dancers capture the moving ballerinas while they were in the air. The dancers did a lot of jumping and sashaying, which added to the happy atmosphere. In conclusion, the Complexions company has been well proven. Although some scenes were difficult to interpret, Dwight Rhoden and Desmond Richardson effectively used dynamics, lighting and music to set the tone of the performance. Tones ranged from serious and frantic to happy and flirtatious. However, the performance never stopped holding the audience's attention from the beginning to the end of the show.
