First of all he tried to persuade Hester to join the witches by coming to meet the Boogeyman in the woods. Mrs. Hibbins knew of the bad circumstances and knew that Hester was on the verge of not caring enough to sign her name in the Bogeyman's book. Hester even wrote back to her by saying that she would "gladly go with you [Hibbins] into the forest, and would signed my [Hester's] name in the Boogeyman's book." (pg. 119) She also frightened Pearl by telling her how her mother had come and already signed her name to the point that Pearl asked her mother about it, who admitted it and was unaware that Mistress Hibbins had filled her mind with all these evil thoughts. And she too knew of his meeting in the woods with Dimmesdale, and commented on it to him the next day in town, saying, "'Then reverend sir, you have paid a visit to the forest,' observed the witch."
