In this particular story, Lu-Lu is the ambition and drive that Heather needs to understand the freedom she already had, but didn't have never used. The two became so close that the narrator began using “we” and “us” to describe himself and the dog (Schuman 107). The pressure and importance you place on your relationship with your dog is nothing new, many humans project their own problems and emotions onto animals in the hope that they can help them as if they were another person.
