In this story, it's summer vacation for Connie. She spends her days at home, avoiding her mother, daydreaming about boys she's met, and looking at herself in the mirror every chance she gets. Her mother always scolded her for this: “Stop gawking. Who are you? Do you think you're that pretty?" (pg. 312). But Connie knew she was pretty. She had blue eyes and long dark blonde hair. She wore part of it pulled up on her head and fluffed up and the rest she let fall down her back Connie believed that her mother always supported her because she was no longer pretty. When Connie was not at home, she spent several evenings a week in the city shopping center so that they can walk around the shops or even going to a movie. Girls wore shorts when they went out. I think this is a good representation of how times were changing and what was socially acceptable for girls to wear
