a) Cite your selection in MLA style. Lessig, Lawrence. “Do copyright laws stifle creativity?” Video clips online.YouTube. YouTube, March 12, 2009. Web. Feb. 11. 2014.b) What is the central message of this text? Please explain it in your own words. The central message of this text is that increasingly outdated copyright laws are being manipulated and used in ridiculous ways. This results in the suppression of people's ability to generate and share their own creative expressions.c) How would you define your position as an audience member (resistant, neutral, etc.)? With your position in mind, what kind of audience do you think the author is trying to reach? Provide an example to support your answer. As a member of the public I am sympathetic. This is a topic I had some knowledge about before watching the video and had already formed my opinion. I believe the author, Lawrence Lessig, is trying to reach a neutral audience. After showing several videos showcasing different types of creative expression, Lessig turns to the topic of copyright laws. He introduces this topic as something new when he states: "It's not new anyway, there is something that is new." This implies that the public would not already be aware of the type of events being discussed and therefore would not have already formed an opinion that would make them neutral. d) What appeals are used in this text (ethics, etc.)? Provide a specific example from the text to support your answer. The two references used are pathos and ethos. An example of pathos is found in the first case mentioned by Lawrence Lessig on the abuse of copyright. This case concerns a mother who records her child dancing and discovers, after sharing the video on YouTube, that the owner of the rights to the music is demanding it be removed. When questioning the behavior of people who take advantage of these laws, Lessig's tone of voice changes and even becomes sarcastic, referring to this mother's actions as "extraordinary abuse." Appeal ethics is also used. Although the author does not verbally provide background information about himself as an authority on the subject, he presents himself with great confidence and assurance on the topic.e) Did you find the argument persuasive? Why or why not? If you were responsible for editing this example, what would you change?
