Topic > Social Media Sites DO NOT Cause Bullying - 1114

Eric had constant pressure and anxiety since his early days in elementary school. To prevent school bullies from talking to Eric on the web, his father and mother decided it would be best to put a family safety filter on the computer. This filter is designed to keep computer users away from potentially harmful websites that include foul language. Even though Eric's parents set up these filters, it did nothing to stop the bullying Eric was experiencing via his email. A group of school bullies found out what his email was and started sending hate emails with harmful content like: "Go kill yourself, loser" and "You're so stupid." Eric's parents had no idea what was happening. Even at school the bullies wouldn't leave Eric alone. They teased Eric at lunch, in class, and even during recess. One day Eric decided that this bullying problem had to stop. So after school, he went to the office, talked to the school counselor, and showed her the hate emails he had received from bullies. The three bullies were expelled from Jacobson Elementary the next day, and Eric never had to deal with another problem with a bully again. Cyberbullying is becoming a major problem that is causing many problems in today's society. Joseph Wright, a pediatrician at the Children's National Health System in Washington, DC, states that: "By third grade, 75 percent of children have been exposed to bullying, most as bystanders" (USA Today, 1). constant contact with their children so they can know when something is wrong with their children.
