Communism is everywhere. And many people were involved in communism all over the world, especially in the 1950s. One of the main people involved in American communism was Joseph McCarthy. McCarthy, albeit in a negative way, was very involved in the search for communists in the United States of America. Joseph McCarthy was born on a country farm in a little town called Appleton, Wisconsin. He was born on November 14, 1908. He grew up with very devout Catholic parents. McCarthy was also the fifth child of nine children. He grew up like any other child, but dropped out of school at the age of fourteen to work. At first he worked on his farm taking care of the chickens. After raising chickens, McCarthy operated a local grocery store in the town of Manawa, Wisconsin. Ultimately, McCarthy decided to return to high school. He returned in 1928, which would have made him twenty years old and still enrolled. After finishing high school, McCarthy attended college at a place called Marquette University. He then attended law school and became a lawyer after graduation (“Joseph McCarthy” 1). Early in McCarthy's political career, he was already walking on thin ice. He made a series of accusations against the government. The first accusation was against the global communist apparatus. McCarthy said the organization has long attempted to penetrate the U.S. government and subvert its foreign policy decisions. The second charge was against the US government itself. McCarthy said official defenses against foreign penetration ranged from weak to nonexistent. The third and final accusation was against the American government,... middle of paper... Embly found out, was expelled, and was never politically involved in anything again. During McCarthy's political career, the panic resulting from witch hunts and the fear of communism became well known. That sentiment became known as McCarthyism (Senator Joseph McCarthy 2). Communism would not be what it is today if it were not for Joseph McCarthy. Works Cited "The Cold War Museum." Cold War Museum. Np, nd Web. January 23, 2014..“Joseph McCarthy.” Educational Spartacus.
