Our case study describes the worst possible outcome of a disagreement between employees. Two employees, who had a history of not getting along, got into an argument, one was killed and the other was charged with second-degree murder. The surviving employee was known as a tough guy and both employees were told they would have to learn to get along or quit. The police spokesperson said employers need to be more vigilant in looking for signs of potential workplace violence and the surviving spouse has filed a lawsuit against the company for negligence.1. What are some indicators of violence an employee might exhibit? Abnormal behavior that intimidates others or oneself is an indicator that should be monitored closely. Aggressive behavior towards others or uncontrolled emotional outbursts that include physical or non-physical reactions may also be signs. What are some actions management can take to help prevent workplace violence? The first line of defense for management that can help prevent workplace violence is in the selection process. Examine the candidate carefully, without going beyond EEOC laws, to identify the potential for violent behavior in the workplace. The next step would be to have an employee assistance program to help employees who need counseling. It is also necessary to monitor the stability of the workforce and maintain awareness of daily concerns that arise and could lead to violence.3. How can employees protect themselves from workplace violence? Employees can protect themselves from violence by paying attention to behaviors that could lead to violence. If they become aware of a situation, they should not overreact or treat it lightly. Do you...... middle of paper...... experience workplace violence in your life? Maybe, but I've experienced it and know others who have, so it's best to be prepared. The key learning is that, for a company, it is important to have an action plan and instill it in the workforce.
