There has been much discussion for many years about whether or not college athletes should be paid. A college athlete is someone who participates in a competitive sport that was born for where they go to school. Some people believe that college athletes should be paid while others do not. College athletes already receive money for their participation in sports through scholarships. College athletes are already given more than just scholarships to play sports. Most universities wouldn't be able to pay athletes anyway because it would cost too much. Athletes should not be paid to play college sports because they are already offered a scholarship, they are given everything, and paying college athletes would be too expensive for colleges. Student athletes already get paid to attend college. Athletic scholarships are used by universities to attract student athletes to their school without paying them illegally. The reason athletic scholarships are available is for people not fortunate enough for an academic scholarship, this gives them hope. Athletes who earn sports scholarships receive up to fifty-eight thousand dollars per year (Daughter 2). Scholarships are awarded through the school's athletics department and not from the school's athletic revenue. This means that there is a maximum number of scholarships a school can offer, so it is not unfair to smaller schools. Universities pay student athletes a full scholarship of up to sixty-two thousand seven hundred thirteen dollars per year. Half goes to state scholarships, tuition, room and board, four thousand six hundred and eighty-three dollars for books and academic support. Eighteen thousand, one hundred and twenty-three dollars is... half the paper... they're already paid up to $125,000 a year." Forbes Magazine August 29, 2013: Page No. Forbes. Web. April 22, 2014.
