The Power of Fear in A Rose for EmilyA Rose for Emily Life is fickle, and most people will be victims of circumstance and the times. Some people choose not to be governed by circumstances and, as they say, “time waits for no man.” Faulkner's Emily lacked the individual confidence, or perhaps the self-esteem and self-esteem, to believe that she could stand on her own and succeed in life, especially in the face of changing times. She had always been ruled and depended on men to protect her, defend her, and act for her. From her father, through her servant Tobe, to Homer Barron, her entire life has been dependent on men. The few flashes of individuality showed his ability to rise to the occasion, to overcome his addiction, when action was the only solution available. Everything she loved has left her. Her father probably made it clear to her that every man she met was no good for her. The villagers even claim that “when her father died, word spread that the house was all she had left; and in a certain sense the people were happy… to be left alone… They had become humanized” (219). It seems like her father's death was a sort of release for Emily. In a way, she could start dating and courting men of her choice and liking. His father could no longer chase them away. But then again, did he have the knowledge to do so, after all those years of his father's past actions? It also appears that the townspeople thought Emily was above the law due to her high-class stature. Now, after her father's death, she may be like them, a middle-class worker. Unfortunately, for Emily she became homebound. She didn't socialize much except for having her servant Tobe visit her to take care of some chores and go to the store for her. Faulkner describes Emily and her family as upper class. Emily carried herself with dignity and people gave her that respect, based on the fear of what Emily might do to them. Emily was a strong-willed person especially when she went to the pharmacy for arsenic.
