Addicted people need to be aware of the services available to them and their children during and after the stages of addiction. The abuse suffered by some of these children may begin early in their lives. Fetal alcohol syndrome begins to affect the baby while it is still in the womb. This disease not only affects the child physically, but emotionally and intellectually. Many parents continue to abuse substances while they are knowingly pregnant. The baby may suffer from withdrawal symptoms due to the medication the mother took during pregnancy. They also tend to be born with abnormalities in their physical and cognitive development. In addition to these already traumatic experiences, AOD addiction can escalate into serious forms of child abuse. Children can suffer physical, emotional and sexual abuse, while abandonment and other forms of abuse by parents are common. These forms of abuse can have serious consequences on the child on an emotional, psychological, intellectual and physical level. Many children who find themselves in these family situations may end up in foster care due to their parents' inability to adequately care for them due to their addictions. If children grow up in families with problems like these, it will most likely affect them for the rest of their lives
