Topic > The Pros and Cons of Stem Cell Research - 932

1.0 Introduction This report aims to investigate the different views held on the pros and cons of developing stem cell research. This report will provide the context of the debate, its social significance, the parties involved and analysis of arguments relating to the topic researched.2.0 The issue and context of the debateThose in favor of stem cell research are optimistic about the continued developments in the field of stem cell research will open the doors to many revolutionary discoveries in biomedical science. Scientific and ethical questions arise as quickly as major milestones are reached in stem cell research. There are two main types of stem cells: embryonic stem cells and adult stem cells. Adult stem cells are undifferentiated cells in our body. But they have a narrow range of cells that can differentiate further. In contrast, embryonic stem cells have the ability to differentiate into nearly two hundred cell types in the human body, called pluripotency. The process of harvesting embryonic stem cells involves the destruction of the embryos (Mooney, 2009). 3.0 The social significance of the debate Thanks to public awareness of science, people have begun to realize that stem cells have the potential to develop cell therapies for many untreated diseases. Opponents have argued that it is morally wrong for the government to support stem cell research because the research requires the destruction of embryos (National Bioethics Advisory Committee [NBAC], 1999, cited in Nisbet, 2004). embryos are discarded every year instead of being used to research cures for human suffering.” (Gilbert, 2008). In 2001, President George W. Bush took a stand to oppose stem cell research through l...... middle of paper ...... oll(2010), about 33% of American voters believe that taxpayers' money should be spent on embryonic stem cell research and more than 50% of voters disagree that taxpayers' money should be spent on research (Roe, 2010). Therefore, it is believed that the government should not fund stem cell research. 6.0 Conclusion From the above discussion it is very clear that there are different opinions on the pros and cons of stem cell research. Based on recent research, scientists have the ability to develop alternatives for embryonic stem cell research. And the utility with respect to embryonic stem cells remains unknown. Undeniably, the problem of stem cell research has its most complex parts to resolve and overcome. But perhaps we can reveal how to carry out stem cell research with bioethical balance and, more importantly, one day without causing any harm to humanity..
