The tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark is one of Shakespeare's most tragic works. Most of the characters in this play suffered heartbreaking deaths, although all characters faced anger, regret, madness, or heartache. Madness was a recurring theme in this comedy, two characters represented it more than others. Ophelia and Hamlet faced similar fates, with similarities and differences along the way, all tied to their madness. Hamlet and Ophelia were two young lovers and had supposedly gone mad because of their relationship and passion for each other. When they truly went mad, it was after each of their fathers died. When Ophelia came in and sang and spoke to the king and queen in Act 4, scene 5, the king says “O, this is the poison of deep sorrow. Everything flows from the death of his father, and now behold…” (Hamlet 4.5.211). In the case of Hamlet, after returning home due to the death of his father, Hamlet is said to be the most tragic and mad figure in the entire play.
