The founding of the National School Lunch Program in 1946, otherwise known as the NSLP, was inspired by investigations of men rejected for the draft during World War II, where a connection was found between the their physical impairments due to inadequate nutritional diets in early childhood (National School Lunch Programme). Their mission is: "A national security measure, to safeguard the health and well-being of the Nation's children." Subsequently implementing after-school initiatives in which after-school activities in school gardens included the provision of snacks to students, in 1998 (National School Canteen Programme). Throughout the history of government involvement in school lunches, changes have been made due to new discoveries. Initially the purpose of school lunches was to give students food in case they didn't get any at the time, it slowly started to evolve into a nutritional meal covering the major food groups.
