Diana Frances Spencer was born on 1 July 1961 at Park House, Sandringham in Norfolk, England. Diana was the youngest daughter of John Spencer and Frances Spencer, Viscount and Viscountess Althorp. His father John Spencer later gained the title of 8th Earl Spencer. Diana was the fourth child born to Viscount and Viscountess Althorp. He had two older sisters Sarah (born 1955) and Jane (born 1957). Frances Spencer had also given birth to a son named John a year before Diana's birth, however he died a few hours after his birth. When the Spencer family discovered that Frances was pregnant with Diana again, they desired another son to carry on the Spencer family name. After Diana, the Spencers finally received a son in 1964, who they named Charles. When Diana was eight her parents divorced. The reason for the divorce was that Diana's mother Frances had cheated on her father with Peter Shand Kydd. After the divorce, Diana moved to London with her mother. However, shortly thereafter her father gained custody of Diana and her siblings with the help of her mother-in-law and they returned home to London. During Diana's youth she attended a local public school. Then, in 1968, Diana was sent to Riddlesworth Hall School, an all-girls boarding school. While at Riddlesworth, Diana did not do very well academically and was transferred to West Heath Girls' School in Sevenoaks, Kent. While here she was considered a poor student. Part of the reason she was regarded this way was that Diana had attempted and failed her O-level twice. O-Levels are an academic qualification used by exam boards in the UK. Although her academic studies were not exceptional, Diana demonstrated a talent for music as a pianist. After West Heath, Diana attended the Institut Alpin Videmanette, a finishing school in Rougemont
