Topic > Gender Roles: The Female Role in Society - 2827

The female gender role in society has created a torturous fate for those who have failed in their role as women, whether as mother, daughter, or wife. The restrictive nature of the role that society imposes on women causes extreme repercussions for those women who cannot achieve their socially designated purpose. These repercussions can be as common as being scolded or as severe as being scolded or hit by a husband or father. The role assigned to women by society is to be a submissive housewife who adores her husband and many children. The wife keeps the house impeccably tidy, takes care of the children and ensures their education and well-being, and acts obsequiously to do everything possible to please her husband. She must be cheerful, sweet and cute, like a cute little doll. The perfect woman in the eyes of society is exactly like a doll: always smiling, always looking her best and having no feelings or opinions that she can truly make her own. She responds only to her husband's requests and does not act or speak out of turn. A woman who speaks her mind or defies the word of a man, especially her husband, is undesirable because she is not the obedient little doll that men adore. Women who do not conform to the rules society has set for them are downgraded to the one trait that differentiates them from men; their sex. Women in society do not talk or think about sex unless their husband asks them to. But when a woman fails to be the doll a man desires, she is worth nothing more than a cheap sex object and is eliminated from society. We as a society don't like to admit that we marginalize women, especially those of lower status. Socioeconomic class, but we impose members......middle of paper......treated like property and abused to make them comply with the demands of men. Even the Cambodian police didn't try to help these girls because they had no control over the misogynistic culture; they often allowed crimes to be committed in exchange for money. Neth explained this corrupt system during his time with Kristof and WuDunn. When Kristof asked her why she never went to the police to help her escape, she explained that "the police don't help me because they get bribes from brothel owners." The influence that brothel owners had throughout Cambodia extended to the one place where girls like Rath, Neth, and Momm were supposed to feel safe and protected; but due to the government's failure to intervene and the public's denial of the problem, girls and young women have become victims of the vile sex industry and the cycle of abuse will continue.
