The Secret Life of Walter Mitty - Character Study of Walter Mitty In the story "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty", a man named Walter Mitty goes to city with his wife to do some things. Throughout this story Walter Mitty is shown to be a very forgetful and truly stubborn man with a vivid imagination. He is constantly distracted and often begins to daydream. There are some clues in this story that show that Walter Mitty is very forgetful. Most of this is probably caused by him continuing to daydream throughout the city trip and not focusing too much on what he is doing. After accompanying his wife to her hair appointment, Walter Mitty began shopping. Walter picks up his overshoes and then "Walter Mitty began to wonder what else his wife had told him to get. She had told him twice before she left."(90) Furthermore, shortly thereafter, Walter Mitty "was always doing something wrong" (90)This last quote shows that Walter Mitty has to forget things very often. The story also shows that Walter Mitty is a really stubborn person. When he was accompanying Mrs. Mitty, Mrs. Mitty told Walter Mitty not to forget the overshoes he should buy while he was in town. Walter Mitty's reaction was "I don't need overshoes," (88) but he relented. to his wife and finally bought the overshoes. Another incident that shows Walter Mitty's stubbornness occurs when his wife tells him to put on gloves, then Walter Mitty puts them on, but when his wife is out of the office he immediately takes them off. Walter Mitty's most obvious characteristic is his constant daydreaming. .Throughout the story, Walter Mitty is easily distracted by everyday events. His dreams transform these simple events into wild fantasies, such as being a surgeon, a bomber pilot, and a sea-going vessel captain. An example of how he turns something from everyday life into a dream occurs when Walter Mitty is trying to remember what his wife told him
